JVP in Sri Lanka ‘totally’ opposed to LGBT rights

A senior leader of a political party in Sri Lanka, often described as Marxist, has strongly rejected the rights of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transsexuals (LGBT).

In an interview given to a state controlled English daily, the national organizer of the Socialist Students Union (SSU) of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa, has said that he is ‘totally against LGBT rights’.

Dr. Jayathissa was a member of two-man delegation to the 18th Assembly of the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) held in Havana, Cuba in November 2015 where the SSU was elected unanimously for the vice presidency.

“I am totally against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT) rights. This is not the need of the human being. We need a future generation,” Dr. Jayathissa has told the Ceylon Daily News (CDN).

Against evolution

The JVP youth leader has described non heterosexual feelings as ‘unnatural’ and ‘against the evolution of the human being’.

“For example, we do not see this behaviour when they are living in the wild. However, if they are caged, we would see this behaviour. I believe in marriage between man and woman. Same sex marriage is unnatural. It is against the evolution of the human being” he has said.

A member of the SSU since 1998, Dr. Jayathissa has continuously been in the JVP  Central Committee for nearly seven years.
