Sri Lanka: Two abductions reported every month

A survey of the Sri Lankan press reveals at least 50 abductions have been reported in the media in the past 26 months. Most of these incidents involved Tamil victims and  the security forces were the the alleged perpetrators. They occurred during 2016, 2017 and the first half of 2018. That’s equivalent to two incidents a month and nobody knows how many more go unreported by victims or the media.

"Inconvenient truths: The newspapers they didn't read" is a compilation of media reports that describe  grave ongoing violations - extrajudicial killings, rapes, abductions, disappearances and torture - that have not stopped.

JDS has not been able to verify the substance of each and every report – we merely present them as information already present in the public domain and, so far as we know, not yet refuted. We believe these reports deserve further investigation and raise some troubling questions about the prevalence of impunity in Sri Lanka.

Please feel free to send us any further information on these reports and any other unreported abductions by writing to: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
