From Babi Yar to Mullivaikkal

The following excerpts are from the Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko's 'Babi Yar'
written in memory of 33,771  Ukrainian Jews who were murdered by the Nazis
on September 29–30, 1941 in Babi Yar, a ravine in the suburbs of Kiev.

 

 "....Here all things scream silently,
and, baring my head,
slowly I feel myself
turning grey.

And I my self
am one massive, soundless scream
above the thousand thousand buried here.

I am each old man here shot dead
I am every child here shot dead

Nothing in me shall ever forget!"
